Today’s air conditioning systems will last longer.
When I first started repairing and replacing Air Conditioning systems back in 1980 we replaced a lot of condensing units between 5 and 10 years old. The compressor warranty was only 5 years back then, so the cost difference in changing the condenser or the compressor was close to the same. Naturally people went with the new unit.
It also seems that units seldom lasted more than 10 years. There are many reasons for that including reciprocating compressor, lack of good installation practices, and the quality of the units built back then. Remember how cars were built in the late 70s and early 80s, the same could be said about air conditioners, then and now.
Today we use scroll compressors which are more efficient and a lot less moving parts to wear out. Most of the time when I replace a system now days, the compressor still works, just a lot of other things are worn out and would cost more than homeowner wants to put into a 10 or 15 year old unit. So they opt for the newer system with the new 410a freon and better efficiencies.
With the newer better made Carrier systems I sell, I believe they will last 15 to 20 years if properly installed and maintained.
